Summer update.

I've been playing my drinking songs here and there around New Hampshire this summer. Last Monday I played St. Patty's Day in August at The Country Cow in Campton, NH. It was great to do a full night of drinkin' tunes again.

Work has begun on the next batch of drinking songs. If all goes well, a new album will launch next February, and the act will hit the pubs again! For now, you can still listen to the songs from Time For Another Round: Gold Edition on the player below, and get yourself a copy of the CD by clicking the link there on the right. Cheers!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Hey hey, the big day is upon us! It's a busy one for me; I'm on the radio (The Planet 100.1fm) first thing in the morning, then I'm off to Talullah's at Ragged Mountain for a 2:30-5:30 show, and then to the infamous Lucky Dog for a 7 to 11. Come on out!

In the meantime, if you're looking for a soundtrack to your drunken revelry, here's the ENTIRE Time For Another Round: Gold Edition CD in a handy streaming player. Enjoy, be safe, and keep an eye on www.drinkingsong.org for new drinking songs. Cheers!

Jim Tyrrell - Sherman The Brave

The epic tale of a high-stakes drinking contest in Jim Tyrrell's sleepy home town. Originally from the album Three Pints Irish, now appearing as the very last track on Time For Another Round: Gold Edition. For more information about the artist visit http://www.jimtyrrell.net/.

Also: tomorrow (3/17) is, well, kind of a special day around here. Seems like it took forever to get here, but tomorrow is finally ST. PATRICK'S DAY! Jim Tyrrell will be on the radio playing his drinking songs to the central New Hampshire crowd, and playing a couple live shows in central New Hampshire. And you can stop by right here at http://www.drinkingsong.org/ and listen to a whole bunch of 'em too! Slainte!

Tonight I'll be at Lago in Meredith, playing a short set of drinking songs to prime the pump. Come on out and let's get the party started!

Sherman The Brave
by Jim Tyrrell

Each one of you here with your glasses of beer
May not know just how lucky you are;
For each glass that we've drank we've got Sherman to thank
'Cause that quiet young man saved the bar

He grew up in town and was always around
But he spent his days largely unseen
He never caused trouble, just ordered a double
And sat by the popcorn machine

It was mid-afternoon on a Sunday in June
When John McCree came through the door
He said with a smile "I'll be stayin' a while
And I'll drink 'til there isn't no more"
They served him a round and he drank it right down
And he did it again and again
And the men grew concerned - if he's true to his word
There would be no more beer left for them

Old Sherman stood up and he emptied his cup
And he said "You've a challenger here -
At the break of the day, only one of us stays -
He's the one who can drink the most beer"
McCree said "That's great - but why must we wait
For the morning time to come along?"
Well Sherman said "Surely it's never too early -
And I do my best drinking at dawn"

The day was just breaking and Plymouth was shaking
With what was about to commence
On the common the Mayor said some sort of prayer
That didn't make very much sense
They stood at the table as best they were able
Each starin' the other one down
They knew without sayin' this game they were playin'
Determined the fate of the town

The contest began with a pilsner so bland
Neither one could be sure it was there
McCree said Let's do this - we'll never get through this
By swallowing glasses of air
They moved on ahead to a bold Irish red
That they both finished off thirstily
And next came a porter at eight and a quarter
Percent alcohol easily

The ale for round four left them asking for more
With neither man fading a bit
Both McCree and old Sherman were bound and determined
To see that the other man quit
They went on this way for most of the day
With the townfolk all watching amazed
McCree lost his swagger and started to stagger
While Sherman looked cool and unfazed

Round twenty-eight brought them an apple concoction
Whose equal had never been found
If you'd given that cider one flick from your lighter
Main Street would have burned to the ground
McCree took a sip and he started to slip
But he righted himself just in time
He finished his cup and he slowly looked up
To see Sherman with round twenty-nine

"What I've got in this glass I have saved for the last"
Sherman said as he served up the ale
It's a homebrew so great that it's banned in this state
And it landed the brewer in jail"
With a mischievous wink Sherman started to drink
And he carefully emptied his glass
But one whiff of the stuff was more than enough
To put John McCree on his ass

The town had been saved by old Sherman the brave
And the townspeople started to cheer
And Sherman said "Wait! If were all celebratin'
Then somebody buy us a beer!"
Well they said "Tell us first, Sherman, how can you thirst
For a bottomless bottle of grog?"
"It should take no explainin' - I've spent me life trainin'
Down at the old Lucky Dog"

Jim Tyrrell - What's Wrong With People

Today's drinking song tells the nightmarish story of finding oneself in a dry town, and asks the eternal question What's Wrong With People? The song appears on the now out-of-print* album Three Pints Irish. For more information about the artist, visit http://www.jimtyrrell.net/.

*The 2008 CD Time For Another Round has been rereleased as a GOLD edition which includes the entire Three Pints Irish EP.

What's Wrong With People
by Jim Tyrrell

I came by train but an hour ago
In search of dinner and a beer
My request was met with voices low
We don't serve that around here

What's wrong with people in this town
What's wrong with the people in this town
What's wrong with people in this town

In every single shop I tried
I simply couldn't win
And every single passerby
Accused me of livin' in sin [chorus]

So back to the train with a ticket in hand
And off to another town
Where hopefully they'll serve a man
Without this runaround [chorus]

Jim Tyrrell - A Quiet Pint

A song originally from the album Three Pints Irish (now on Time For Another Round: Gold Edition) with -- dare I say it -- a little sincerity. Not bad, for a song that's really about booze. For more information about the artist, visit http://www.jimtyrrell.net/.

A Quiet Pint
by Jim Tyrrell

Well I've played these songs for years
And I've had my share of beers
And I've loved every one that comes along
But the favorite of mine
Comes just past closing time
It's a nice quiet pint and a song

Sure I don't mind the crowd
And it's fine when they're loud
And they're clappin' and singin' along
And when they cheer it's divine
But when they leave then it's time
For a nice quiet pint and a song

But every now and again
Among the rowdy young men
I see a lady sitting alone
And so as not to be harassed
She keeps her eyes on her glass
And has a nice quiet pint on her own

So when they close for the day
And all the noise has gone away
If you'll stay just a little too long
Well there's a chair here for you
We'll take a minute or two
And have a nice quiet pint and a song.

Jim Tyrrell - The Wall

Here's a couple songs from this morning's live performance on The Daily Planet Morning Show.

Today's featured song (originally from the album Three Pints Irish, now found on the new CD Time For Another Round: Gold Edition) goes out to all the brave men and women who tried to take on The Wall at their local drinking establishment. Soldier on, brave souls.

The Wall
by Jim Tyrrell

{chorus} Way hey, what do you say
We'll get to the end if it takes us all day
So line 'em right up and we'll get through them all
We're workin' our way down the wall

Bartender let's make this thing clear
We're drinking that whole row of beer
We'll hand in our keys if that's what you please
'Cause we're plannin' on stayin' right here

Singing... {chorus}

Well Stacey is looking unsound
She just leapt from her stool with a bound
She threw up all that drink in the ladies' room sink
And she's back in time for the next round

Singing... {chorus}

Well come on we're making good time
And so far I'm still doing fine
But my stomach's betrayed by that hard lemonade
That they stuck near the end of the line

{spoken: just plug your nose and get through it boys -- sing with me now}

{chorus}

Now the finish is finally in sight
But to say we're relieved isn't right
See the end it the pits 'cause we're stuck with a Schlitz
As the very last beer of the night

Singing...
{alt chorus} Way hey, what do you say
We got to the end and it took us all day
And that's just as well 'cause we can't drink no more
And we're workin' our way to the floor.

Jim Tyrrell - Naked On The Meach

I recently did a phone interview with the Concord Monitor, and they ran a story in today's paper. You can read it right here.

Here's another song from the album Time For Another Round: Gold Edition. A tale of triumph over adversity, and an appeal to the lowest common denominator. For more information about the artist, visit http://www.jimtyrrell.net/.

Naked On The Meach
by Jim Tyrrell

I have a speech impediment some people cannot mear
I've tried my mest to cure it mut it's way meyond repair
I have no explanation for this thing I cannot say
Mut I can tell you that it helped me out the other day

I was miking to the grocery store to get a rack of meer
I'd always hoped that mooze might make the promlem disappear
And on the way I saw a thing that stopped me with a screech
A meautiful young woman lying naked on the meach

Now I had not meen lucky with the fairer sex mefore
'Cause when I tried to mutter them up they laughed and hit the floor
Mut here I'd seen an angel and I knew I had to try
So choosing my words carefully I walked up and said hi

I said You are so pretty I've just got to know your name
And I could spend the day with you if it's all the same
Mut the thing that I said next was astronomically dumm
I said And maybe later I could get acquainted with your mum

Will wonders never cease, she thought me sweet for that remark
She gathered up her clothing and we pedaled through the park
I'd finally found a lady who could tolerate my speech
The meautiful young woman lying naked on the meach
The meautiful young woman lying naked on the meach

Jim Tyrrell - The Harvard Line

A spirited recounting of a drunken morning on the Boston subway. Originally on the Three Pints Irish CD, it can now be found on Time For Another Round: Gold Edition. For more info on this artist, visit http://www.jimtyrrell.net/.

The Harvard Line
by Jim Tyrrell

Hung over on a bright white Monday
Headed in to Boston town
All alone on a red line subway
9 0'clock and I'm Park Street bound
Oh what a weekend - my bones are creakin'
Feelin' like I'm half alive
But in the pocket of my jacket
Something helping me survive

Chorus: I owe it all to the barley wine
The one cure for the morning time
Another drink and I'll be just fine
I'm sneakin' a bottle on the Harvard line

The train is filling up with people
With the sleep still in their eye
I tell 'em we should fear no evil
We've got to keep our spirits high
We'll fill the time cards - and back to Harvard
But hold on to your handles, men
We're either listin' hard to starboard
Or I've gone and fallen down again {chorus}

I'm staring with determination
At a map I can't understand
I've ended up in a blue line station
By the name of Wonderland
And after quite a long inspection
A young attendant turns me 'round
Points me in the right direction
2 o'clock and I'm Harvard bound {chorus x2}

Jim Tyrrell - Until Tomorrow

The closing track from Jim Tyrrell's album Time For Another Round. The just-released Gold Edition goes on to feature the six tracks from the 2007 album Three Pints Irish, and you can hear those right here starting tomorrow. For more information about the artist visit http://www.jimtyrrell.net/.

Until Tomorrow
by Jim Tyrrell

They're sweeping the doorway
They're putting up chairs
The bartender's giving us
An impatient stare
The lights have come on
The clock has run down
It's time to be on
Once we finish this round

We'd probably stay here
If you gave us the chance
A lifetime to play here
The drink and the dance
But finish your glasses
And gather your things
Until tomorrow
And the good times it brings

The liquor commissioner
Says the party must end
If we ever want to
Come back here again
So up from the tables
And out of the door
Like we did yesterday
And each day before

We'd probably stay here
If you gave us the chance
a lifetime to play here
The drink and the dance
But finish your glasses
And take leave of your friends
Until tomorrow
When I see you again

Until tomorrow
When I see you again.

Jim Tyrrell - I'm Drinkin' Alone

A song of fierce individuality, and brotherhood. Hey, drink enough and you can believe anything. From the album Time For Another Round: Gold Edition. For more information about the artist visit http://www.jimtyrrell.net/.

I'm Drinkin' Alone
by Jim Tyrrell

I'm drinkin' alone
I'm drinkin' alone
You can join if you want to
But I'll still be drinkin' alone
I'm singin' alone
I'm singin' alone
You can join in if you want to
But I'll still be singin' alone

Sit beside me and order a beer
In this lovely new tavern you found
If you think to come back in a year
I'll still be hangin' around [chorus]

Don't you know that I haven't a care
For bein' alone in this town
Even though we all happen to share
This road we're all staggerin' down [chorus]

Drink along if you want to
And I'll still be drinkin' alone

Jim Tyrrell - Gray Rainbow

For today's featured number, Jim Tyrrell spins a tale of economic hardship and homemade booze. The song is from the album Time For Another Round: Gold Edition. For more information on the artist, visit http://www.jimtyrrell.net/.

Gray Rainbow
by Jim Tyrrell

It's a long way up through the dark black clouds
To where trouble grows but don't look now
'Cause here it comes on this old brick town
The gray rainbow is coming down

I was a workin' man down at the mill
But they closed the door so I work the still
Makin' moonshine and drinkin' it down
Until the next job comes around (chorus)

For fifty years that mill and I
Pumped poison smoke into the sky
And since those days don't nothin' grow
But a thundercloud and a gray rainbow (chorus)

These friends of mine with nothin' to do
Tried my moonshine, now they drink it too
So I make a dime when they come around
It's the only payin' work I've found (chorus)

Been a long long time, it seems like years
And we're goin' blind and no one cares
'Cause all that this town's got left to show
Is a thundercloud and a gray rainbow (chorus)

Jim Tyrrell - A Pint In A Broken Glass

Jim Tyrrell offers a song that purports itself to be the 'love song' on the album Time For Another Round: Gold Edition, but really, it's about booze like all the others. For more information about the artist visit http://www.jimtyrrell.net/.

A Pint In A Broken Glass
by Jim Tyrrell

I'll never get over my Jenny McPhee
The barmaid that I once wed
In place of a clover when she poured it for me
My stout bore a heart instead
And she always served it with a wink and a grin
And many an hour to pass
It felt like our hearts couldn't hold our love in
Like a pint in a broken glass

But I wouldn't listen when she started to say
"It's come time to settle down"
I'd just go missing for most of the day
Stumbling around the town
She would say that she meant to be free
And she set to escaping the past
But all of that noise seemed as pointless to me
As a pint in a broken glass

It's ten years later and she's seven years gone
I couldn't say where she's bound
But I've stayed devoted as the time has slipped on
To holding this barstool down
I suppose you may see her someday
On the arm of a lad with more class
Well he best not ignore her or she may slip away
Like a pint in a broken glass.

Jim Tyrrell - Bad Ideas (and more!)

I played drinking songs LIVE on the Daily Planet Morning Show (WPNH 100.1fm) this morning. Here's one of the segments from the show. (I played a third song later in the show but didn't get a recording of it.)

Powered by Podbean.com

Today's drinking song: Back in my WPI days (I didn't attend, but I visited for a looong time), there was a phenomenon that seemed to happen every time a party found its way to 1:30am. Someone would invariably come up with a 'bad idea'. This song is a testament to that. From the album Time For Another Round: Gold Edition. For more information about this artist, visit http://www.jimtyrrell.net/.

Bad Ideas
by Jim Tyrrell

Chorus: We've gotten right to business with the Jagermeister here
But I hope that by 1:30 I'll be gone
'Cause at the bottom of the bottle is a very bad idea
And I can feel a new one coming on

At half past one the other night we went out for a beer
And I'm sure we made for quite a sorry sight
The sound of drunken college girls caught Terry by the ear
And that's the last we saw of him that night
He came back in the morning wearing curlers and a dress
And we had to know what that was all about
He woke up at the girl's school quite confused and in a mess
And they needed a disguise to get him out {chorus}

Just the other morning I drove over to the jail
Though I didn't know what Jack had gone and done
And this is what he told me as I offered up the bail:
"Well everything was fine 'til half past one.
I was running naked through the sprinklers with some friends
When they picked us up and held us here 'til dawn
And if I could I'd probably do it all over again
But I guess I might not pick the Mayor's lawn" {chorus}

I've got a friend named Billy and he likes to tip 'em back
And trouble seems to follow where he goes
We'd been drinkin' hard the night he plotted an attack
And you can guess the time I do suppose
He found a chunk of cinder block and headed up the stair
And we followed like a howling drunk parade
He dropped it through the windshield of his mother's old Bel Air
Just so he could hear the sound it made {chorus x2}

Every single bottle's got a very bad idea
And I can feel a new one coming on

Jim Tyrrell - Cabin Fever

The snow just kept coming in early 2008, and this song was written and recorded during one of those seemingly endless blizzards. It appears on the album Time For Another Round: Gold Edition. For more information about the artist, visit http://www.jimtyrrell.net/.

Cabin Fever
by Jim Tyrrell

Lately it's been hard for you and I
We've been far too long stuck inside

We'd go crazy here
Deep in this snowbound town
If not for the beer
Drinkin' the winter down

Sometimes the colder months quickly go
This time it's been snow upon snow

We'd go crazy here
Deep in this snowbound town
If not for the beer
Drinkin' the winter down

I can see the sun peekin' through
She's got so much work left to do

Soon when summer's here
Green grow the rushes o
For now another beer
Under the winter snow

We'd go crazy here
Deep in this snowbound town
If not for the beer
Drinkin' the winter down

Jim Tyrrell - Half Empty/Half Full

Nothing like a little chemically-induced fuzziness to bring things into focus. Wait, what? The third track on the CD Time For Another Round: Gold Edition. For more information about the artist, visit http://www.jimtyrrell.net/.

Half Empty/Half Full
by Jim Tyrrell

Last night at Shooter's I ordered a drink
And the barkeep obliged with a curious wink
He sent it down to me but to my dismay
He chose for some reason to fill it halfway

I said to him Johnny, where's the rest of me stout
And he said That's a thing I been thinkin' about
I'd like your opinion before your first pull
Is that pint half empty or is it half full?

Rum a dum didle a rum a dum dow
Johnny just send us another one down

I said Thinkin' games never interested me
In fact, drinkin' games are more my speed you see
And he said this puzzle was one and the same
And that very idea was the point of the game

I sat for a minute more scratchin' me head
And my thirst overcame me and finally I said
I'm drinkin' this whether you fill it or not
But pour me another and I'll give it some thought (chorus)

I got good and stiff half a pint at a time
Sendin' the empty ones back down the line
And seein' those glasses all scattered around
Right there in an instant my answer I'd found

I told him It clearly depends who you are
The hard workin' tapper or the drunk at the bar
To me there's no difference but not so for you
You'll pour twice as many before I get through (chorus x2)

Jim Tyrrell - Cute Boots

Today's song is from the 2008 album Time For Another Round: Gold Edition. The story of a man with the courage to stand up for falling down. For more information on this artist, visit http://www.jimtyrrell.net/.

Cute Boots
by Jim Tyrrell

I went out bar hoppin' on Sunday
As such is the custom with me
At a tavern called Goodbye Blue Monday
I lost my fight with gravity
And laying there I got to thinking
I suppose there's worse places to be
So I rolled on my side and kept drinking
And through my confusion I see...

A cute pair of boots right next to me
And two young legs as long as the day
I spoke of the love that came through me
And she started to shuffle away
Well I sure didn't mean to offend her
But she had me right out of my head
And as clearly as I can remember
Here's more or less what I said...

Chorus: Hey cute boots, you ought to come down here
The party's right here on the floor
Those other fellas around here
Must not know what this place is for
The best drinkin' is under the table
We all get there eventually
So cute boots as soon as you're able
Come kick 'em back here with me

Through an old swinging door I could see them
From under the ladies room stall
And the truth it became clear to me then
She's a spirited lass after all
No I hadn't offended that cutie
And I know why she hastened to scoot
It's a true testament to her beauty
That the girl's even cute when she boots {chorus}

Jim Tyrrell - The Seven Barrel Stout

In West Lebanon, NH, there's a place called the Seven Barrel Brewery. And in this brewery there is a beer, and this beer is the RIP Stout. And this beer was fundamental in the production of the album Time For Another Round: Gold Edition. For more information about the artist, visit http://www.jimtyrrell.net/.

The Seven Barrel Stout
by Jim Tyrrell

Every night when Danny White lay fast asleep in bed
His Lily stayed not by his side, she hit the town instead
Soon his friends would tell him they'd been seeing her around
So one night before they went to bed he sat his Lily down

He said I have but one desire, of that you can be sure
So make for me this promise and I'll know your heart is pure
If you play the midnight prowler and you're set on sneaking out
Just come back with a growler of that Seven Barrel stout

Rap tap with the glasses boys and let me hear you shout
You'll never find a better beer than the Seven Barrel stout

Sherman was a lad you might have heard me sing about
That young man's drinking prowess was renowned beyond a doubt
Well no one's ever seen him passing out or getting ill
But I recall a night when he had finally got his fill

The Seven Barrel stout was so divine it made him cry
He had one after another and he ran that barrel dry
There were other beers to offer but he quickly ruled them out
Saying nothing here could live up to that Seven Barrel stout

Rap tap with the glasses boys and let me hear you shout
You'll never find a better beer than the Seven Barrel stout

Now the Seven Barrel's always got a party going on
And there's not another place to be when the baseball game is on
I love to watch the Red Sox and I cheer them on with pride
But when they play the Brewers I've a hard time picking sides

'Cause there's a team who's mascot I've no choice but to support
But just like when they take the field, their efforts come up short
Now I do respect that noble cause Milwaukee's all about
But that lighter fare just can't compare with a Seven Barrel stout

Rap tap with the glasses boys and let me hear you shout
You'll never find a better beer than the Seven Barrel stout
Rap tap with the glasses boys and let me hear you shout
You'll never find a better beer than the Seven Barrel stout

Blue Spud Shoes - All Tan

Here's one from musical collaborators Blue Spud Shoes, recorded at Song Fight Live: Santa Cruz in 2006.

All Tan
by Blue Spud Shoes

I love me the Amber, I love me the Ale.
I'll even drink a Pilsner, if it's not too pale.
The Hefeweizens good, The Doppelbock is great.
I drink 'em in the morning, I drink em 'til it's late.

[chorus] There's one beer that escapes me, It's called a Black and Tan.
Mixed drinks are called cocktails, I drink mine like a man.
If it's not gonna be a Guiness, It's gotta be ALL TAN! [end chorus]

Last week I found a Belgian White, Way back on the shelf.
I drank a bunch, got high as a kite, If I do so say myself.
Some people drink the lite beers, Some even go for ice.
They Budweiser brings big sad tears, To my bloodshot eyes.

[repeat chorus]

I got a jones for I.P.A. I drink it by the pail.
Keep away the Lambics, I'm not some damn female.
A glass all tall and cloudy, To put me to my bed.
And if you offer light beer, I'll punch you in the... NECK!

[repeat chorus]

I got birdcage mouth and red, red eyes
Gotta think up last nights alibis

La la la la la la la la la la la la hey hey

Drunk last night and the night before
Tonight I'm gonna drink some more
I just can't control myself,
Which explains my current state of health

La la la la la la la la la la la la hey hey
I hate the dawning of Saturday morning hey hey

The demon drink has got hold of me
I'm in a state of advanced depravity
I'm lyin' in the ditch with all my money spent
Covered in my own excrement

La la la la la la la la la la la la hey hey

I hate the dawning of Saturday morning
Saturday morning comes without warning
I wish I could go out without being drawn in to drinking so I feel bad in the morning
Saturday morning
Saturday morning
Hey hey.

Put One Down
by Ghost Town Gridlock

We head out to the pub, order up a slice of heaven
Maybe a beer and a shot or perhaps we'll have a seven and seven

Take a shot of Jack and tilt your head back
Buy another round and put one down

Another bar, we blow things up with a depth charged Irish Car Bomb
Order up another beer and walk around with one each palm

Take a shot of Jack and tilt your head back
Buy another round and put one down
Put one down

Taverns all have that one ugly Train Spotting bathroom stall
We can't drive to get home, looks like we're gonna' have to crawl

Take a shot of Jack and tilt your head back
Buy another round and put one down
Put one down
